IndieToolbar 1.0

Although the idea of a “floating toolbar” to hold “favorites” may sound good in theory, you quickly run into problems when using it, predominately in the “floating toolbar” and “favorites” departments.

The chief problem with the “favorites” is that they aren’t really your favorite web sites at all — but merely a slapdash compilation of arbitrarily selected establishments of the Man. Although I’m sure there are people on this wad of organic filth that need a little direction in their web surfing, I really feel that limiting oneself to 58 sites, none of which you are allowed to select yourself, is really going a tad far.

If you’re really looking to waste screen space, nothing beats a nice floating bar of icons to regale you with their simple elegance and smooth curves. But wait — that’s what the Dock is for! So obviously we are left with one conclusion as to the purpose of this bit of widgetry: Global Monkey Conspiracy. Why else would an icon for MacFans be included? We all know how much those monkeys love fans. Why do you think they’re amassing slaves at their outpost in rural Texas? To create a refreshing cool breeze of course. And if that isn’t true, you can butter my butt and call me a biscuit.

And as this app does not include PerversionTracker support, we are forced to add several points. Or perhaps we simply don’t understand the “indieness” inherent in this tragic lack. Speaking of which, “The IndieToolbars” would be a great name for a Finnish polka band.

Out of respect to REAL Software, the programing technology used to create this rather useleREALss appliBASICation will not be mentioned.

Alexander Wilson Studios, for a flatfooted yet vaguely pancakeish experience, I’ll let you by with a 8.9.

Thanks for the mention! I found your site a few days ago and bookmarked it, thinking I'll check it out later. Well, today I was looking at my bookmarks and thought "PerversionTracker? I don't remember that. I should delete that before my wife sees it, but not before one last look." Imagine my surprise and delight....

Surprisingly, the Indie Toolbar--which _did_ start out as an attempt to form a Finnish polka band, you wicked psychics--will make sense to some people. Three at least. See, last year I created a whole bunch of toolbar icons (links) for the OS X version of Internet Explorer. ( http://www.kartania.com/content.php?Show=ieicons )

They've been very popular, which I originally thought was only because there was an actual way to customize the browser (you can't even use flavicons!). But my two most frequent requests have been (1) to use the icons with other browsers and (2) to use more than just what few icons space allows on IE. I received such requests even after Safari came out.

At any rate, version 1.0 is a test to see if this is worth the effort. I limited it to 58 of the most popular current icons just for time restraints. People do seem to like it (lots of Canadians do; I get tons of requests for Canadian sites both with the toolbar and the separate icons) so I dare say there will probably be future versions.

I don't know anything about a Global Monkey conspiracy. But "conspiracy" should not be capitalized and you should probably remove all reference to GMc from your site. I'm telling you as a friend.

Again, thanks for the mention and, err, review. Lots of fun. Send me a note next time. Oh yes, there will be a next time, I'm sure. I'll link back to your site next chance I get.

Alex.
